Siemens Mag Meters and Siemens Electromagnetic Flow Meters: Reliable Water Utility Grid Hardware

Quick Answer: Siemens electromagnetic flow meters are reliable hardware for water utility grids. They measure raw water, potable water and treated effluent from DN15 to DN2000 with 0.2 to 0.5 percent accuracy. Silver Automation Instruments supplies these meters and compatible Silver Instruments models for Southeast Asia, Oceania, Latin America, Africa and the Middle East.

What Makes Electromagnetic Flow Meters Suited to Water Grids

Water utility grids need meters that survive flooded pits, variable conductivity and low night flow. Electromagnetic flow meters have no moving parts and no pressure drop. The sensor bore stays open. A DN300 meter in a raw water line can pass 700 cubic metres per hour at 1 m/s without obstruction. This matters in cities where pumping costs are high.

Key Specifications for Water Networks

Siemens Mag Meters often use a PTFE or hard rubber liner with 316L or Hastelloy electrodes. For drinking water, most utilities pick 316L electrodes and a hard rubber liner. For chlorinated water or seawater, PTFE liner and Hastelloy C electrodes last longer. Output options include 4-20 mA HART, pulse, frequency and Modbus RTU. Power can be 85 to 265 V AC or 24 V DC. Accuracy is typically 0.2 percent of reading for DN25 to DN600. For DN700 to DN2000 the accuracy is around 0.3 percent. Process temperature ratings go up to 70 °C for rubber liners and 120 °C for PTFE liners. Pressure ratings are usually PN10, PN16 or PN40 depending on flange standard.

Why Some Water Utilities Specify Siemens Mag Meters

Siemens electromagnetic flow meters have a long track record in municipal water projects. Many tender documents in the Middle East and Southeast Asia list Siemens as an approved brand. Silver Automation Instruments can supply original Siemens Mag Meters with factory calibration. If the project budget requires an alternative, we also offer SIL-MAG models with the same liner and electrode choices. We have supplied both routes to water utility contractors in Vietnam and the Philippines.

Silver Instruments Models and Siemens Equivalents for Water Grids

For a DN300 raw water line in a municipal plant, Siemens SITRANS FM MAG 5100 W with hard rubber liner and 316L electrodes is a common choice. For cost sensitive projects we recommend the Silver Instruments SIL-MAG 2100 with PTFE liner, 316L electrodes and 4-20 mA HART output. For a DN50 dosing line in a desalination plant, the SIL-MAG 1100 compact meter with 24 V DC power is easier to install in tight skids. For a district metered area with DN150 pipe, the SIL-MAG 2100 remote converter version with IP68 sensor works well in flooded pits. These models are compatible with Siemens Mag Meters installation lengths for many DN sizes. We supply spare cables, grounding rings and calibration certificates.

Site Conditions That Affect Selection

In practice, engineers often skip one detail: grounding. Electromagnetic flow meters need a reliable ground connection. In plastic or internally lined pipe, add grounding rings or grounding electrodes. We have seen this on customer sites many times. A water treatment plant in Malaysia had unstable readings on a DN400 meter because the contractor used no grounding rings on a PE pipe. After adding grounding rings the reading stabilized. Here is the thing: conductivity below 20 µS/cm can cause issues for standard mag meters. Most treated water supplies stay above 100 µS/cm. If you are measuring demineralized water, tell us the conductivity so we can check the sensor.

Delivery, Calibration and Support

Silver Automation Instruments keeps a stock of DN50 to DN300 electromagnetic flow meters for water utility projects. Larger sizes DN350 to DN2000 are built to order with a 15 to 25 day lead time. We cal
