Open Channel Flow Meters: Ultrasonic Flume and We

Open Channel Flow Meters for Wastewater Channels

Quick Answer: Silver Instruments supplies ultrasonic open channel flow meters for wastewater channels, flumes, and weirs. The sensor reads liquid level without touching the water. The converter calculates flow from the level signal and the flume or weir geometry.

Open channel flow measurement works differently from full pipe flow measurement. A pipe flow meter sees a closed, pressurized stream. An open channel meter sees a free liquid surface. Wastewater plants, irrigation canals, and industrial discharge channels often run this way. Ultrasonic flume and weir monitors for open wastewater channels use a level sensor and a primary device to calculate flow.

Silver Instruments offers the UOC-300 series for open channel monitoring. This device pairs a non-contact ultrasonic transducer with a wall mount or panel mount converter. The transducer mounts above the channel. No contact with the wastewater occurs. That matters in sewage plants, food processing drains, and chemical water treatment basins.

Flume and Weir Options

A flume narrows the channel and creates a known stage to flow relationship. A weir is a notch or dam that liquid spills over. Both convert level into a repeatable flow value. Common choices include Parshall flumes, rectangular weirs, trapezoidal flumes, and 90 degree V-notch weirs.

Parshall flumes suit channels with solids and high flows. A 6 inch Parshall flume typically handles 3 to 630 cubic meters per hour. A 90 degree V-notch weir fits small discharge pipes and low flow. A rectangular weir works where the channel width is fixed and flows are mid range. For raw sewage, most engineers pick a Parshall flume because the Parshall flume self cleans better than a sharp weir.

Here is the thing. Many field problems come from the primary device, not the transmitter. If the flume throat is too large for the dry season flow, the meter will not see enough level change. If the weir crest is damaged, the flow table will be wrong. Silver Instruments can check your channel dimensions and recommend the right primary device size.

UOC-300 Ultrasonic Open Channel Flow Meter

The UOC-300 sensor operates from 0.15 to 10 meters level range. Accuracy is plus or minus 0.25 percent of measured level under stable air. Flow accuracy depends on the flume or weir. Expect plus or minus 1 to 2 percent of reading when the primary device is sized and installed correctly.

The converter accepts 85 to 265 V AC or 24 V DC power. Outputs include 4-20 mA HART, RS485 Modbus RTU, and two relay alarms. The display shows level, flow, and totalized volume. A PT100 input is available for temperature compensation. The enclosure is IP65. The transducer is IP68 for humid sewer air.

Temperature range for the transducer is from -20 °C to 60 °C. The converter works from -10 °C to 55 °C. That covers most outdoor installations in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and northern Australia.

Where These Meters Are Used

We have supplied open channel flow meters to a municipal wastewater utility in Indonesia for a 600 mm Parshall flume. The meter replaced an old float system that clogged during wet season. A palm oil mill in Malaysia uses the UOC-300 on a rectangular weir to monitor treated effluent before river discharge. A seafood processor in Vietnam measures washdown water using a V-notch weir.

Because the sensor is non-contact, it handles grease, rags, and floating solids better than submerged probes. Most engineers skip the dive into hydraulic formulas. The converter has built in tables for Parshall flumes, weirs, and user defined level to flow curves.

In practice, a stilling well improves readings when the influent is rough or foam appears. We have seen this issue on customer sites many times. A pump start or a partially opened gate upstream ruins the level signal more than any instrument fault.

Installation Advice

Mount the transducer at least 0.3 meters above the highest expected liquid level. Keep the beam perpendicular to the still water surface. Install the flume or weir in a straight channel section. Avoid turbulence, air bubbles, and direct sunlight on the transducer face.

Open channel flow meters need enough upstream straight run. For a Parshall flume, 10 to 15 times the throat width upstream usually works. A V-notch weir needs 20 times the maximum head upstream for stable level. Poor location choices cause more errors than sensor drift.

For existing concrete channels, build a rectangular approach section if the flow is not straight. Do not mount the sensor over a step, a bend, or an air diffuser. Those features create false echoes.

Selecting a Model and Getting a Quote

Send us your channel type, flume or weir dimensions, liquid description, and flow range. We will recommend a UOC-300 configuration and price. Our team ships to Southeast Asia, Oceania, Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East. Contact Silver Instruments at Tel: +86-25-68650347, Whatsapp: +86-25-52155837, or WeChat: +86 15365082610.

For quick sizing, include the maximum water level in millimeters, the flume throat width, and the minimum night flow. A complete open channel flow meter package includes the transducer, converter, and flume curve. This data lets us select the sensor range and the flow curve before quotation.

FAQ

What is the difference between an open channel flow meter and a full pipe flow meter?

A full pipe flow meter needs a closed, pressurized pipe. An open channel flow meter measures level in a flume or weir and converts that level to flow. Open channel meters suit drains, sewers, and plant effluent channels.

Can the ultrasonic sensor handle foam or floating debris?

Yes, because the sensor does not contact the water. Heavy foam can absorb part of the ultrasonic pulse. If foam is thick, install a stilling well or choose a Parshall flume with a stable flow path.

Which flume or weir gives the best accuracy?

A Parshall flume often gives the best repeatability for raw wastewater. A 90 degree V-notch weir gives better low flow resolution. Accuracy also depends on upstream straight run and level sensor alignment.

What outputs does the UOC-300 support?

The UOC-300 supports 4-20 mA HART, RS485 Modbus RTU, and two relay outputs. The converter can totalize flow in cubic meters or liters.

How do we install an open channel flow meter on an existing concrete channel?

Install the primary flume or weir first. Then mount the ultrasonic sensor above the stilling section. Check the zero level, set the flume curve in the converter, and compare one or two manual readings with the displayed value.
