Open Channel Flow Meters for Wastewater Channels

Open channel flow measurement works differently from full pipe flow measurement. A pipe flow meter sees a closed, pressurized stream. An open channel meter sees a free liquid surface. Flume and Weir Options

A flume narrows the channel and creates a known stage to flow relationship. A weir is a notch or dam that liquid spills over. Both convert level into a repeatable flow value. Common choices include Parshall flumes, rectangular weirs, trapezoidal flumes, and 90 degree V-notch weirs.


Parshall flumes suit channels with solids and high flows. A 6 inch Parshall flume typically handles 3 to 630 cubic meters per hour. A 90 degree V-notch weir fits small discharge pipes and low flow. A rectangular weir works where the channel width is fixed and flows are mid range. For raw sewage, most engineers pick a Parshall flume because the Parshall flume self cleans better than a sharp weir.


Here is the thing. Many field problems come from the primary device, not the transmitter. If the flume throat is too large for the dry season flow, the meter will not see enough level change. UOC-300 Ultrasonic Open Channel Flow Meter

The UOC-300 sensor operates from 0.15 to 10 meters level range. Accuracy is plus or minus 0.25 percent of measured level under stable air. Flow accuracy depends on the flume or weir. Expect plus or minus 1 to 2 percent of reading when the primary device is sized and installed correctly.


The converter accepts 85 to 265 V AC or 24 V DC power. Outputs include 4-20 mA HART, RS485 Modbus RTU, and two relay alarms. The display shows level, flow, and totalized volume. A PT100 input is available for temperature compensation. The enclosure is IP65. The transducer is IP68 for humid sewer air.


Temperature range for the transducer is from -20 °C to 60 °C. The converter works from -10 °C to 55 °C. That covers most outdoor installations in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and northern Australia.


Where These Meters Are Used

We have supplied open channel flow meters to a municipal wastewater utility in Indonesia for a 600 mm Parshall flume. The meter replaced an old float system that clogged during wet season.
